What They Don’t Teach You in Law School about Family Law

  1. Heartbreak is not rational, linear or easy to navigate.
  2. People would rather be doing pretty much anything else than coming to see a family law lawyer.
  3. Your law colleagues may think you are sinking your legal career by going into family law vs. “real” practice.
  4. Pushing a box of tissue towards your crying or distraught client and giving them counselling referrals is not enough.
  5. This will be hard work. Very hard.
  6. There will be moments when you wonder if it’s all worth it.
  7. There will be moments when you realize it “is” all worth it.
  8. You will need a good support system, especially of non-lawyers.
  9. You don’t have to go to court to be a “real” lawyer.
  10. You will learn a lot from your clients if you take the time to listen to them.
